Dandy duo in Storm story

25 May, 2009 09:52 AM
DANDENONG'S Kenny Bromwich and Elyon Brown were part of Melbourne Storm's history-making national under-18 team.

Both were in the Storm's 16-player squad that made it to the grand final in their first season in the SG Ball Cup competition in Sydney earlier this month.

The Storm's dream of taking out the title in its debut season ended with a dominant display from Canterbury Bulldogs, who won 42-16.

Bromwich and Brown were among Storm squad members who were predominantly born, raised and coached in Victoria, and were given little hope of success this year.

But they defied the odds by defeating more traditional rugby league clubs such as Newcastle, Illawarra, Canberra and South Sydney, and thrashing the Brisbane Broncos in the semi-finals.

Storm coach Kim Williams said the team had overcome numerous obstacles to upset its more fancied opponents during the season.

"It's been an outstanding season and just the way the boys went about everything was fantastic.

"Even in defeat, there was a lot of integrity and no hard feelings. They did us really proud."
