MATTHEW Koch hasn't played at Buckley Ridges Cricket Club since under-14s but that hasn't stopped his former clubmates rallying around him.
The 28-year-old Koch has been fighting a 19-month battle against a brain tumour and he has put himself forward, along with his girlfriend Corinne Cole, to take part in The Ride to Conquer Cancer - a two-day, 200-kilometre bicycle ride starting on October 28.
Koch, whose family moved to the Mornington Peninsula soon after he finished under-14 cricket, needed $5000 to enter the ride, which will benefit the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
Buckley Ridges player Matthew Carman said that when the Ridges found out about Koch's quest, they decided to help with his fund-raising.
But the Ridges faithful may have even surprised themselves by the level of their support for Koch, as the club has organised a family festival and charity Twenty20 game at their Pultney Street Oval on March 4.
The Ridges will host a number of fund-raising activities during the day after several prizes were donated by supporters and friends of the club.
The Ridges are also taking bids for any person who would like to play in the Twenty20 game. The highest bidders will get to play and a number of people have already offered bids of more than $20.
Children's activities and a barbecue are also planned for the day.
Carman said Koch's former teammate Jason Cramer had told the Koch family about the fund-raising efforts. "The Kochs were ecstatic about the support. It has taken off a bit more than anticipated. We thought we would raise a few hundred dollars, now it looks like it will be a lot more."
Carman and Cramer will captain the two sides while other DDCA and past DDCA players have also offered support.
Carman also encouraged people from Greater Dandenong and Melbourne's south-east to attend the day and make it special. "When it comes to sponsors and supporters for this game then the more the merrier," he said.
Bids for the Twenty20 game close on February 27. All money will go to Koch's appeal.
