WNBL: Rangers hand out a drubbing

30 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
DANDENONG Rangers earned their third-highest winning margin with a 94-36 win against the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra yesterday.

The Rangers' 58-point victory margin trailed 66- and 72-point wins, both in 2009, as their highest WNBL wins, as the Rangers looked to take as much percentage and confidence as they could from their visit to Canberra.

The visitors expanded their lead at each change, keeping the Institute to single-figure scoring in the second, third and fourth quarters. Kath Macleod led the way for the Rangers with 20 points and 10 assists while Krista Phillips and Steph Cumming each added 17 points.

Rangers star Jenna O'Hea scored nine points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals. Promising Victorian forward Sara Blicavs scored 10 points for the institute.

Rangers coach Mark Wright didn't even use a time out during the match, letting his side correct its own errors against the institute, which has suffered several big losses this season.

Dandenong has an 11-8 record and sits in sixth place, between h fifth-placed Bendigo Spirit and seventh-placed Sydney University Flames.

The Rangers visit the Flames for a do-or-die clash this Friday night in Sydney before their final two matches against West Coast (home) and Adelaide (away).

Rangers forward Tegan Cunningham missed the AIS game after straining her hip during training on Saturday. She will have tests this week but could still play next game.
