AN Endeavour Hills family have dropped their suburban lives to work as unpaid volunteers in central Vietnam for two years.
Chris and Leanne Sargeant and their four children - who have dubbed themselves as 'six sparrows' - are in need of sponsors ahead of jetting off in three weeks for their odyssey.
As field workers for Assemblies of God aid agency AOG World Relief Vietnam, they will help provide clean water, sanitation and pigs for needy families.
Mr Sargeant said the family were inspired by a "calling in Leanne's heart" - a social worker, she had long harboured a desire to go to help in Vietnam.
He said a previous trip to Vietnam was like a "recalibration" for his children, who would be schooled on the Victorian government's education website.
The family has held a fund-raising night and used their home's equity to fund their mission.
Vietnam was in vogue with international tourists but that had not solved its widespread poverty, Mr Sargeant said. "Where we're based is earmarked as a tourism hub. For the locals, there is no clean water, poor sanitation and kids are getting sick."
The Sargeants will help install water filtration systems at schools, allowing children to bring home clean water for their families.
There will also be a 'pay it forward' scheme where a $100 pig is donated to families who each give one of the pig's offspring to another family.
"The families cry when they get these pigs. It's like winning Tattslotto for them," Mr Sargeant said. "It frees up a bit of extra cash for the family. It also gives their children jobs to look after the pigs and keeps them at home away from human traffickers."
Mr Sargeant said young girls were tricked by traffickers into leaving home to work in brothels in Cambodia or be married off to Chinese or Korean men.
"If their parents are sick and don't have livelihoods, there's more incentive for the child to go and make money for the family."
