BERWICK Show patrons have been set the Herculean challenge of hauling an 11-tonne truck rig by hand and rope on Saturday.
The truck pull is the brain child of Dandenong-based businessman Craig Membrey, who is using the show-stopping event to raise money for depression advocacy group beyondblue.
Teams of 10 will compete for almost $2000 in cash as they attempt to pull a Kenworth T904 over 30 metres in the fastest time.
The luxurious truck is a chrome-plated, pictorial tribute to Mr Membrey's late son Rowan. A talented BMX rider, Rowan was 17 when he took his own life last year after being afflicted by depression and ice addiction.
Mr Membrey, who owns Membrey's Transport and Crane Hire, said the event aimed to raise awareness among young people as well as cash for beyondblue.
A beyondblue information stall will be set up to encourage people who are depressed to seek help. "Unfortunately. Rowan didn't ask for enough help and we lost him," Mr Membrey said.
The truck pull is part of Mr Membrey's campaign 'Make it Happen', which aims to cut the suicide toll. The toll is estimated to be 2400 a year in Australia - twice the annual road toll.
Show volunteer Warwick Glendenning, who also lost a son to suicide, said the event was a fun way to reach out to young people.
"Losing someone to suicide affects people in lots of ways and you wouldn't wish it on your worst enemy. If we can get one young person to realise there's help out there then we've achieved something."
The truck will be displayed at the Berwick Show at Akoonah Park on Saturday and Sunday and the pull is at 4pm on Saturday.
