THE controversial soil processing plant proposed for Dandenong South will go ahead after approval was granted last week.

SITA Australia was granted a works approval permit from Environment Protection Authority Victoria for the plant, to be built at the Taylors Road landfill.

It will treat contaminated soil from sites across Melbourne and create less hazardous products.

The company expects it to be developed and operational within two years. The full story will be in next week's Weekly.

An EPA officer admitted at a conference that there is some risk to the community from the proposed plant and that it is acceptable risk. It is not necessary to locate the plant at that site — there are safer sites. The risk to the community is avoidable therefore it is not acceptable.
