New era in Doveton education begins

24 Oct, 2011 01:00 AM
AS the opening of the new Doveton College nears, two local primary schools are getting ready to close.

Under a $30 million Doveton education regeneration announced in 2009, Endeavour Hills Secondary College and Doveton and Eumemmerring primary schools will amalgamate next year to form Doveton College.

The two schools will close at the end of this year and students will move across to the new school, which is being constructed in Laurel Avenue, at the beginning of term one in 2012.

Endeavour Hills Secondary College students up to year 9 will move to the school at the start of the following year.

The regeneration project is jointly funded by the state and Commonwealth governments and the Colman Foundation, which is also contributing an additional $500,000 a year for eight years.

Eumemmerring Primary School marked the end of its 35 years with a celebration last Friday and Doveton Primary School has plans for a similar event and 'pseudo-reunion' at the end of November.

Doveton Primary School principal Manuela Wintle acknowledged it was a sad time marking the end of an era, but it was important to focus on the "wonderful" new school as well.

She said the school community was excited for the move and was in the "fine tuning" stages of transition.

Eumemmerring Primary School principal Christine Toth said there had been numerous community meetings during the past few years to discuss the changes, so the schools' closures certainly weren't coming as a surprise.

"The community has known about this for quite a number of years," she said. "It's to improve education for the students into the future. They're quite excited."

Brett New will lead the new Doveton College, which will provide prenatal services and education up to year 9 in a model that is the first of its kind in Australia.

Maternal and child health workers will operate from the school four days a week.

"All the research is telling us to maximise the learning opportunities for children and young people, we really need to start early with them," Mr New said. "It's the first school in Australia to be looking at this model."

While most students from the amalgamating schools will be moving to Doveton College, Mr New said the school was still open to those from outside.

He said there was a Doveton College website under construction and information booklets about the new school were available from the main office of Doveton Primary School at 25-35 Rowan Drive.
