I WAS interested to read in a Melbourne daily newspaper about a plover laying its eggs on a corrugated roof and the eggs tumbling down the valleys.
For many years on a shelf behind my desk at the now Greater Dandenong Weekly, a photograph of a plover guarding its eggs on a nature strip in a busy Doveton street bore pride of place.
I still have the picture and cherish it. It was taken by the late Barry Palmer, a prizewinning photographer and a Journal photographer for many years.
Barry lay on his stomach on the nature strip for a considerable time to obtain the photo at the right moment as the bird guarded the eggs. He waited until a shaft of sunlight illuminated them.
This species of plover is prevalent in southern Victoria and in Tasmania and is noted for straight bills that are thickened at the end.
My home town
Margaret Murray, president of the Dandenong branch of the Country Women's Association is among the senior citizens who maintain loyalty and volunteer service to the city they are proud to call home.
She has a host of golden memories of her young and adult life spent happily within its boundaries. Thomas Street is among the areas in Dandenong she will always hold dear to her heart.
Margaret was born in a cottage hospital in Thomas Street, Dandenong, and remembers attending picture shows at the Mayfair Theatre in the same street. She attended the Dandenong West Primary School, later the Dandenong High School.
Skullcaps for soldiers
The Dandenong branch of the CWA does not have the same number of members it did in previous years. But what it lacks it strength, it makes up for in current members' enthusiasm and dedication to give help where help is needed.
Members have knitted a number of skullcaps for Australian soldiers serving in Afghanistan to wear under their helmets. They also knitted 60 knee rugs to be distributed to worthy causes and are to be complimented on their thoughtfulness.
