WHAT DO YOU THINK? SCROLL TO BELOW THIS STORY TO POST A COMMENT.CONTROVERSY surrounds a new McDonald's restaurant planned for Frankston-Dandenong Road in Dandenong South.
Traders along Greens Road , which intersects Frankston-Dandenong Road, disagree over whether a no-standing zone is required in front of their businesses if the development goes ahead.
Last week, the Weekly reported that Greater Dandenong Council had intended installing 'No stopping at all times' signs between 119 Greens Road and Frankston-Dandenong Road intersection.
But it was forced to back down after outraged business owners said the lack of trucks stopping would destroy their businesses.
A council spokeswoman said the potential establishment of the McDonald's at 146-148 Frankston-Dandenong Road was not the reason for the change in the parking restrictions.
The council is now consulting traders on the length of the no-stopping zone, with parking restrictions currently limited to 105 Greens Road to Frankston-Dandenong Road only.
Business owner Shaun Brown, who runs Airport Bus, said the parking around Greens Road was already bad and that a 24-hour McDonald's would make the situation even worse.
"It's very dangerous pulling out because people park along there. It's very difficult to get in and out.
"If they're going to let people park along there, it'll just be a nightmare. There should be complete no-standing."
But Lacey Ward, of truck stop business Cafe Lacey, disagreed and wants customers to continue be able to park near her shop.
"Most of my customers are truck drivers so there's nowhere for them to pull up and they need to eat."
She said that she wanted to keep the parking as it was, even with the introduction of a McDonald's.
"I do understand how getting closer to the corner, cars need to be able to move over and that's fine but back up where we are, it's not a problem."
The McDonald's application went before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last Tuesday. A decision has yet to be made.
