Greater Dandenong Council is bracing for an estimated $1 million carbon tax bill.

Corporate services director Mick Jaensch said ratepayers would be charged for extra waste disposal costs of about $22 a tonne, amounting to more than $600,000 a year.

The council's electricity bills will rise by at least 10 per cent and gas by 9 per cent. The council would try to absorb the utility price rise.
