A MIGRANT who arrived in Australia more than 20 years ago for a ‘‘big adventure’’ has received a Public Service Medal in today’s Australia Day honours list.
Hong Kong-born Mary Chan, of Dingley Village, felt humbled by the recognition of her work as a senior officer at the Department of Health’s Dandenong office.
She said her career as a mental health nurse and administrator had been founded on a strong work ethic and a caring nature.
“My parents [who ran a Chinese takeaway in England] instilled that work ethic into us. We would be disowned if we were unemployed.’’
When asked about Australia Day, she says she became a citizen two years after arrival. She loved the lifestyle and stayed despite all of her family remaining in England.
“It’s just a great country.’’
Today’s award tops off the fairy tale for her.
“I’m absolutely thrilled and in disbelief. I have been moved by the aspect that my colleagues and supervisors have thought so highly of my efforts.’’
